ABDO Publishing
has been publishing non-fiction
for the school and public libraries since 1982. They have had
many award winning nonfiction titles due to their wonderful
illustrations, photographs, and accurate information. They have
4 main imprints.
-
Sand Castle is a library of nonfiction books for the
beginning reader. Reading difficulty is graduated across
three levels, which are indicated by the number of flags on
the castle. The books incorporate basic concepts of the
phonics and integrated language methods of reading
instruction. Most words are short, and phrases, letter
sounds, and word sounds are repeated. Full-color
photography reinforces the meanings and concepts of the
words. The books are full of color and the stories are
something that the youngsters will want to look at and read.
-
Buddy Books are what we call “First Report books” as
they have information for the beginning student who is
writing their first reports. The color and text make it
inviting to read and gives the student the information they
want. They cover the subjects of states, animals, national
monuments, biographies, holidays, dinosaurs, and continents.
-
Checkerboard Library is well known in the library market
for their animal books that children love to look at and
gather the good information that they present. This series
is for the 4th grade reading level and makes
learning fun. Some of the areas covered are biographies of
artists, illustrators, authors, actors, singers. Presidents,
athletes, and explorers. They cover the social studies
areas of symbols, landmarks, everyday heroes, character,
Native American tribes, colonies, cultures, and government.
Students will enlarge their world with the geography section
on cities, countries, and states. The extreme sports are
a favorite of every young man with the girls going for the
crafts. How about reading about a bat the size of a
bumblebee?
- ABDO
& Daughters is aimed at the grade 5+ area with coverage
of American Moments such as the “Miracle on Ice”, the War in
Iraq, the American Wars, biographies of famous Americans,
